Kano Deputy Governor Resigns Amid Impeachment Proceedings

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure amid mounting political pressure.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Friday, March 27, by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

His resignation follows earlier moves by the Kano State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.

In addition, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano had, on Wednesday, declined an application filed by Abdussalam seeking to stop the impeachment process.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after careful consideration, with emphasis on preserving stability and ensuring effective governance in the state.

“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor.

“In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve,” the statement said.

The movement, however, stressed that Abdussalam’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, maintaining that he stands by his record in public service.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

“The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” it stated.

It further described the move as a strategic step aimed at reducing political tension and safeguarding peace in Kano State.

Beyond his exit from office, the statement indicated that Abdussalam would now channel his efforts into political mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.

“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” it added.

Supporters of the movement and residents of Kano State were urged to remain calm and law-abiding, with assurances that further updates would be communicated as necessary.
