Residents of Bajallabe community in the FCE Gate 1 area of Kano metropolis have reportedly rejected an alleged N10 million bribe offered to community representatives and local vigilante members in an attempt to conceal a suspected drug trafficking operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after residents reportedly became suspicious of a Golf vehicle parked beside a motorcycle near a residential building in the community.
According to a statement by Lamara Garba, a member of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, residents approached the occupants of the vehicle after suspecting that it was carrying substances believed to be illicit drugs.
Garba said the driver allegedly offered N10 million to the community representatives and vigilante personnel in exchange for allowing the matter to be ignored.
The residents and vigilante members, however, reportedly turned down the offer and insisted that the appropriate authorities be contacted to investigate the suspected drug-related activity.
As tension reportedly mounted at the scene, the chairman of the local vigilante group alerted the Multi-Agency Task Force and the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division.
Police officers subsequently arrived at the location and took custody of the vehicle and the persons involved before transferring them to the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division for further investigation.
The Multi-Agency Task Force also commenced its own assessment of the incident in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
Garba stressed that the substances recovered from the vehicle remained suspected illicit drugs and that their actual identity and legal status would be established through investigation and, where necessary, laboratory analysis.

The Chairman of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, commended the residents and vigilante members for refusing to compromise despite the alleged financial inducement.
Rimin Gado described their decision as an example of community vigilance and civic responsibility in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
He urged other communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies whenever suspicious activities are detected.
The task force chairman further disclosed that, in line with an executive order recently signed by the Kano State Government, the property where the suspected substances were discovered would be sealed.
He added that further action would be taken in accordance with the provisions of the executive order and relevant laws.
The incident highlights the growing role of community members and local vigilante groups in reporting suspected criminal activities while allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct proper investigations.
