Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal disagreements involving the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Hanga announced his exit in a resignation letter dated Monday, August 3, 2026, addressed to the Ward Executive Chairman of Dakata Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The senator said his decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation,” adding that his resignation took immediate effect as he pursued a new political direction.
He thanked the ward leadership and members for their support during his time in the party and requested that his name be removed from the NDC membership register at the ward level.

The development comes amid reported tensions within the party over internal arrangements ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly allegations that the allocation of Kano State House of Assembly tickets favoured allies of Kwankwaso, leaving some stakeholders dissatisfied.
Hanga’s exit adds to the latest wave of political realignments in Kano, a state where party structures and alliances have shifted repeatedly ahead of major elections.
The senator, who joined the NDC in 2026 after leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was among the prominent figures who moved platforms as opposition forces repositioned ahead of the next electoral cycle.
His resignation comes against the backdrop of previous party disputes in Kano, where disagreements over candidate selection and leadership influence have repeatedly triggered defections and reshaped political alliances.
The NDC had not issued an official reaction to Hanga’s resignation as of the time of filing this report.
