Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has given his approval for the appointment of Muhammad Musa as the inaugural Provost of the newly founded Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science in Ambursa.
The move is aimed at enhancing healthcare training and advancing maternal health services across the state.
The appointment was communicated through a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Dr Suwaiba Salihu, on Thursday, the 29th of January, 2026, which was made available to journalists.
The letter emphasized that the selection of Musa was made “strictly on merit.”
Salihu extended her congratulations to Musa, noting that the appointment was well-deserved, and encouraged him to uphold the confidence placed in him.
“I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, has approved your appointment as Provost of Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science, Ambursa,” the letter stated.
She further urged the new provost to show “dedication, diligence and commitment” in carrying out his responsibilities, highlighting that the success of the institution would rely heavily on strong leadership during its formative stage.
The creation of the College of Midwifery Science is part of the Idris administration’s broader effort to expand access to quality healthcare education, address manpower shortages in the health sector, and improve maternal and child health outcomes throughout Kebbi State.
The appointment of Muhammad Musa takes immediate effect.

Reports indicate that Kebbi State continues to face persistent challenges in maternal and child healthcare delivery, including shortages of trained midwives, especially in rural areas.
Data from the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Demographic and Health Survey show that Nigeria still ranks among countries with high maternal mortality ratios, with northern states being disproportionately affected.
In response, the Kebbi State Government has stepped up investments in healthcare infrastructure and workforce development since 2023. Initiatives have included the establishment of new health training institutions, recruitment of medical personnel, and rehabilitation of primary healthcare centres.
The Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Science in Ambursa is among these specialized institutions, designed to enhance the training of skilled midwives, improve maternal healthcare access, and support Kebbi State’s alignment with national and global maternal health targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals on maternal and child health.
