Lagos Speaker Obasa’s Son Confirmed as Agege Council Chairman

The Agege Legislative Council has approved the appointment of Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area.

His confirmation came during the council’s plenary on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, following the resignation of Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, who stepped down from office citing health reasons.

Until his confirmation, Abdulganiyu served as Vice Chairman of the council and had been acting in the top role during Egunjobi’s extended medical leave.

The lawmakers’ unanimous vote sealed his transition to full leadership, ensuring continuity in local administration.

Council Leader, Rasheed Adekunle, who presided over the session, said the move was guided by provisions of the Lagos State Local Government Administration Law and was necessary to prevent any leadership vacuum.

“Abdulganiyu’s confirmation reflects both the council’s confidence in his capability and the need to sustain ongoing development programmes across Agege,” Adekunle said.

In his first address after confirmation, Abdulganiyu Obasa promised to consolidate on his predecessor’s projects while introducing fresh initiatives that would improve infrastructure, youth engagement, and transparency in governance.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve. My focus will be on sustaining progress and deepening collaboration with community leaders and residents,” he told council members.

Residents of Agege expressed varied views on the development, some commended the council for maintaining stability while others called for broader inclusion in local political decisions.

The change in leadership marks a rare instance where a serving Speaker’s direct family member holds a local government chairmanship position in Lagos State.
