Late for Work, Too Fast to Stop: Speeding Driver Jailed for Killing Young Father

A 22-year-old man, Evan Davis, has been jailed for causing the death of a young father while speeding to work on Calder Road in Edinburgh.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of July 4, 2023, when Davis struck Stephen McGovern, a 21-year-old father of two, who was crossing the road—believed to be heading to catch a bus. McGovern died at the scene from catastrophic injuries after being flung into the air by the impact.

Davis was reportedly late for his shift in Aberdeen and was driving well above the 40mph limit when the collision happened. CCTV footage shown in court revealed he accelerated from 53mph to over 62mph in the four seconds leading up to the crash. The footage was described as “quite shocking” by the presiding judge.

Appearing before the High Court in Glasgow on August 1, 2025, Davis pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, banned from driving for five years, and ordered to complete a mandatory road safety rehabilitation course.

In delivering judgment, Lord Arthurson condemned Davis’s conduct as “an avoidable act of gross negligence with irreversible consequences.”

The court heard emotional statements from the victim’s family, with McGovern’s widow describing the devastating loss and the profound impact on their children.

The tragedy has reignited public concern over speeding and road safety. Authorities have urged all motorists to obey speed limits, especially in pedestrian-heavy and residential zones.

“This case is a stark reminder that reckless driving not only endangers lives—it destroys families,” one road safety advocate said following the sentencing.
