Mahdi Shehu has rejected claims surrounding the proposed Kano Metropolitan Rail Project, labelling it a political ruse rather than a genuine development plan.
Shehu made his position known in a post published on X on Thursday, the 29th of January, 2026, where he questioned the authenticity of the rail initiative.
He maintained that the project is absent from any recognised government framework, stressing that it does not feature in the 2026 budget proposals.
According to Shehu, there has been no formal submission to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for consideration, and there is currently no evidence of technical groundwork, including designs, contractors, or consultants.
He alleged that the announcement was deliberately crafted to mislead residents of Kano State.
“This is pure deception. No such provision in the 2026 budgetary proposals. No such memo presented to FEC for deliberation. No design on the ground. No contractor. No consultants.
“Just to deceive Kano State people because Abba has joined the “Gorilla and reptiles” club where venoms flow,” he wrote.

Shehu’s remarks came in response to a statement by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who announced that the Federal Government had approved a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for the state.
It is also noteworthy that the Kano governor has officially aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has continued to spark widespread reactions both within Kano State and across the country.
