MURIC Raises Alarm Over INEC Chair’s Neutrality

As preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action by removing the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Josiah Amupitan.

The organisation stated that such action is crucial to preserving public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the polls.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, the 29th of January, 2026, and signed by the Kano State Chairman of MURIC, Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa.

According to the group, Prof. Amupitan’s previous conduct raises serious concerns and justifies demands for his removal, resignation, or possible prosecution.

MURIC alleged that the INEC chairman was responsible for authoring a controversial legal document submitted to authorities in the United States, which accused Nigeria of Christian genocide.

The group noted that the document, an 80-page publication released in 2020, bears the title ‘Legal Brief: Genocide in Nigeria: The Implications for the International Community’.

The organisation further warned that allowing Amupitan to remain in office would undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

“In 2020, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) published a 80-page Legal Brief titled, ‘Legal Brief: Genocide in Nigeria: The Implications for the International Community’.
The document was commissioned by the International Committee on Nigeria (ICON) and the International Organisation on Peace-building and Social Justice (PSJ), and was later highlighted in the ‘Religious Freedom in the World 2025’ report.

“Amupitan’s Legal Brief argued that attacks by Boko Haram and “Fulani herdsmen” were not merely localized conflicts but formed a “coordinated anti-Christian campaign”. He clearly expressed that it was a “notorious fact” that crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide were being perpetrated in Nigeria.

“Our position, therefore, is that the demand for Amupitan’s immediate removal, resignation, or prosecution is to protect and safeguard the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

“We therefore demand the immediate removal of Amupitan for his glaring partisanship and open despise and resentment against Nigerian Muslims,” MURIC said.
