National Assembly To Resume Plenary Tuesday Amid Anticipated Key Decisions

Lawmakers at Nigeria’s National Assembly (Nigeria) will return to plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, as both chambers prepare to deliberate on what officials describe as critical national matters.

The resumption, which affects the Senate (Nigeria) and the House of Representatives (Nigeria), was confirmed on Sunday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.

In a circular to legislators, Ogunlana said plenary would commence at 11:00 a.m., urging senators and members to rearrange prior engagements to ensure full attendance.

He noted that each chamber is expected to take “very crucial decisions,” although no details were provided on the specific agenda items.

The recall follows an earlier suspension of plenary sittings to allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) additional time to defend their 2026 budget proposals.

However, attention is already shifting to electoral matters after the Independent National Electoral Commission released its timetable for the 2027 general elections.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the House would reconvene for an emergency session to address issues arising from the proposed Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The development was communicated to lawmakers through an internal memo from the Speaker’s office, according to a statement by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi.

The new election schedule has sparked debate among lawmakers and members of the public, particularly over dates said to clash with the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan, expected around early February 2027.

Several senators and stakeholders have raised concerns that the overlap could affect voter participation and logistics, prompting calls for adjustments.

Tuesday’s plenary is now widely expected to feature discussions on possible revisions to the electoral calendar, alongside other pending legislative business.
