Navy Cracks Down On Oil Theft, Seizes 44,000 Litres In Rivers

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have intercepted approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products and arrested eight individuals during a coordinated operation in Rivers State.

The development was disclosed on Sunday in Abuja by the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, who said the operation was carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL by personnel of NNS Pathfinder.

According to Folorunsho, the successful raid took place across the Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo axis following credible intelligence on illegal refining activities in the area.

Naval operatives reportedly intercepted two wooden boats heavily loaded with suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

The operation also led to the arrest of eight suspects allegedly connected to the illicit trade, while several armed accomplices fled upon sighting the naval patrol team.

“The arrested suspects and recovered products are currently in custody and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution,” Folorunsho stated.

He noted that the operation aligns with directives from the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, who has ordered intensified action against crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.

Folorunsho further emphasized that the Navy would maintain the momentum of Operation DELTA SENTINEL through intelligence-led missions, increased patrols, and collaboration with other security agencies.

Reaffirming its stance, the Navy pledged continued efforts to secure Nigeria’s maritime environment and protect critical national resources from economic sabotage.
