NDDC Extends Relief to Flood-Hit Bayelsa Communities, Reaffirms Commitment

In a bid to cushion the effects of devastating floods in Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has delivered critical relief materials to the Otuasega and Oruma communities, reinforcing its mandate to support vulnerable populations across the region.

The intervention, conducted in partnership with indigenous NGO, the Ednest Egerue Foundation, was described by the Commission as part of a broader commitment to sustainable development and humanitarian support under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the distribution exercise, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku—represented by the Deputy Director of Education, Health, and Social Services, Mrs. Chioma Nwakwe—reiterated the Commission’s dedication to aligning its social initiatives with federal priorities.

“With the support of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, we are once again in Otuasega to deliver relief materials to our people,” Nwakwe said. “This distribution is part of our ongoing commitment to reach communities in distress and ease the burden caused by recurring natural disasters.”

She also recalled recent Commission-led initiatives in the area, including the 2025 Free Medical Mission and the commissioning of a remodeled hospital and school in Otuasega by the First Lady.

In addition to medical aid, the NDDC has also provided educational tools such as chairs, desks, and U-Lesson tablets to local schools.

The founder of the Ednest Egerue Foundation, Susan Ibiama, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for facilitating the partnership and taking concrete steps to support displaced and economically impacted communities.

“This flood brought significant hardship to the people,” Ibiama stated. “We commend the NDDC for not only recognizing the need but for acting decisively.”

Local leaders in the benefiting communities welcomed the gesture with appreciation and praise.

Receiving the items on behalf of Otuasega, Mr. Innocent Abbey, Vice Chairman of the Community Development Committee, acknowledged the Commission’s ongoing developmental impact, citing completed projects such as a modern school, a hospital, and a lodge for National Youth Service Corps members.

“These relief items will go a long way in easing the hardship our people are facing. We are truly grateful,” Abbey said.

From the Ngbiama-Oruma axis, the community’s secretary, Mr. Akaribo Lamanya, hailed the current NDDC leadership, pledging that the relief items would be distributed fairly and transparently among affected households.

This latest round of palliative support comes amid increasing pressure on government agencies to respond more swiftly to the environmental and humanitarian challenges facing the oil-rich but flood-prone Niger Delta.

The NDDC said its interventions in Bayelsa and other states are ongoing and would continue to target the most affected and underserved populations.
