The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Canadian side AFC Toronto have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at Super Falcons star Esther Okoronkwo on social media following a theft incident during Nigeria’s participation at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Okoronkwo became the target of online attacks after money belonging to her was stolen at the Super Falcons’ team hotel by a hotel employee.
Moroccan authorities swiftly arrested the suspect, recovered the stolen cash, ordered that it be returned to the Nigerian international, and sentenced the offender to six months in prison.
Despite the prompt intervention by law enforcement, the forward was subjected to racist remarks and monkey emojis across social media platforms, prompting widespread condemnation from both the NFF and her club.
In a statement shared on its official X account, the NFF described the abuse as unacceptable, insisting that racism and discrimination have no place in football or society.

The federation noted that there was no justification for targeting the player, especially since the individual responsible for the theft had already been apprehended, the money recovered, and justice served.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of the Super Falcons, stressing that the incident would not distract the team from its quest for success at the continental tournament.
According to the NFF, the players remain united and fully focused on their campaign, beginning with their opening match against Malawi.
AFC Toronto also expressed unwavering support for Okoronkwo, declaring that football must remain a safe and inclusive environment for everyone regardless of race or background.
The Canadian club said the Nigerian striker had endured racist abuse while representing her country and emphasized that such behavior has no place in the game.
Reaffirming its commitment to equality and inclusion, the club said it stands firmly with Okoronkwo and all athletes who experience racism on or off the pitch.
Quoting the Super Falcons forward, AFC Toronto added, “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.”
The club pledged to continue promoting respect, diversity and inclusion within football while supporting efforts to eliminate discrimination from the sport.
