Nnamdi Kanu Has No Interest in Standing Trial – Laolu Akande

A former media aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has said that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not showing interest in continuing his terrorism trial.

Speaking on Thursday, the 23rd of October, 2025, Akande noted that Kanu appears more focused on pursuing a political resolution rather than facing the case in court.

He made the comment during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, shortly after Kanu announced his decision to represent himself before Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court, following the withdrawal of his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi.

According to Akande: “It’s clear that Kanu is not interested in pursuing this case because the behavior and conduct of himself and his lawyers after they have said they want a prompt trial and you have a judge ready to do the right thing and then this is what you people are working out, you want to represent yourself? That tells me that he’s not interested in pursuing the case in court.

“He is interested in a political solution and it does have a bit of credit, there are people who have behaved like Kanu and their cases were settled in a political way.

“So I guess that is what he’s more interested in. If you look at the trajectory of the case, part of the reason it has taken this long is because of some of these shenanigans on the side of the government and his own side, changing lawyers back and forth.

“I think that we need to explore the political solution not because I don’t believe that Kanu should get his day in court but clearly, Kanu is being drawn out and I think for the sake of our national cohesion, we need to look at solving this matter politically.”

Akande added that both the government and Kanu’s camp have contributed to the delays surrounding the case, stressing that a political settlement might be the best path forward for peace and unity in the country.
