NYCN Cautions Youths Against Planned October 20 Protest Over Kanu’s Detention

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has warned Nigerian youths against participating in the planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, over the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The council issued the warning in a statement released on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in Abuja, following growing online mobilisation for nationwide demonstrations demanding Kanu’s release.

NYCN National President, Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, cautioned that joining the protest could lead to a breakdown of law and order, describing it as “ill-timed and capable of destabilising the country.”

He cited a recent court order obtained by the Nigeria Police Force from the Federal High Court in Abuja, restraining any group or individual from staging protests that could threaten public peace.

“The Youth Council acknowledges the right to peaceful protest, but we must also respect the rule of law and avoid actions that can jeopardise national security,” the statement read in part.

Sukubo also referenced a security advisory issued by the United States Embassy in Abuja, warning its citizens to avoid large gatherings and potential protest zones between October 20 and 23, 2025.

He appealed to young Nigerians to exercise restraint and seek constructive, lawful ways to demand justice, noting that dialogue and civic engagement remain the best tools for addressing grievances.

“The unity of Nigeria must be preserved. We urge our youths to resist being used by individuals or groups with hidden political motives,” the NYCN president added.

The council reaffirmed its support for the ongoing legal process concerning Nnamdi Kanu’s case and expressed confidence that the judiciary would deliver justice in due course.

Security agencies across the country have reportedly stepped up surveillance ahead of the planned protest, with warnings issued to prevent any breach of peace.
