Obi-Backed LP Faction Holds Convention Feb 28, Targets 10m Members

The Labour Party faction allied with former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti has launched a nationwide membership revalidation and registration drive aimed at enrolling 10 million Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.

At the flag-off ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, December 17, the party also fixed February 28, 2026, for its national convention.

Acting National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, who joined the event virtually, said the exercise was part of efforts to strengthen the party after a turbulent period marked by internal divisions and legal battles.

“As we are all aware, our party has passed through a period of intense challenges.

“The majority of the issues have been resolved by the courts, while the few remaining matters are still before the judiciary. We remain confident they will soon be conclusively settled,” Usman said.

She explained that the registration campaign was strategic, designed to expand the Labour Party’s grassroots presence and rebuild its structure at all levels.

“We are targeting 10 million new members as we prepare for the next election season,” she stated.

Acting National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had acknowledged receipt of the party’s timetable for congresses.

He added that new members would be eligible to participate in upcoming congress elections leading up to the national convention.

Social activist Aisha Yusuf urged Nigerians to get involved in politics, saying disengagement had allowed poor leadership to persist.

“This is the time to tell those who doubt us to watch the Labour Party succeed,” she said.

The Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, inaugurated as chairman of the steering committee overseeing the registration, described the task as a collective effort “to strengthen democracy and empower Nigerians politically.”

The move comes as rival Labour Party factions continue parallel mobilisation campaigns ahead of 2027.
