Senator Sunday Katung, who represents Kaduna South, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Katung’s defection was formally announced during Wednesday’s plenary, December 17, after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read his resignation letter on the floor of the upper chamber.
“I wish to formally confirm my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from 31st day of October 2025,” the letter stated.
“This decision, though deeply considered, was not made lightly. Over the years, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and service to the people, which the PDP then stood for.
“However, evolving political realities within our nation and my constituency have necessitated a re-evaluation of the platform called PDP and the best platform suited for me to advance my aspiration of taking care of my people and their welfare.”
Katung, who first hinted at his defection on social media on November 1, said he made the move after “wide consultations” with political stakeholders, supporters, and other Nigerians.

He said his decision to join the APC was influenced by the party’s progressive ideals and its current leadership, which he described as inclusive and forward-looking.
“I resolved to align with the only party that is not only progressive but has hope for the common man in this country,” Katung said.
“My decision is guided solely to serve my constituents and the nation meaningfully. No politician will want to truncate his political ambitions or his political destiny,” he explained.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for what he called years of opportunity and wished his former party well.
“I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities the PDP afforded me over the years and wish them success in their future endeavours,” he added.
Following the reading of his letter, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele led other APC senators in welcoming Katung to the ruling party, after which he joined them in a group photograph with Akpabio before taking his new seat on the majority side of the chamber.
