Obi Faults Leaders Over Focus On Elections Amid Rising Insecurity

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has taken a swipe at Nigeria’s political class, accusing them of concentrating on future elections while insecurity spreads across the country.

Obi made his position known in a statement posted Monday, the 9th of March, 2026, on his official social media page, where he raised alarm over a series of violent incidents affecting both civilians and security personnel.

He warned that the worsening security climate shows the country is facing a serious threat.

“Our nation is clearly under siege, and the scale of insecurity is becoming unbearable, spreading widely all over the country,” he said.

Obi pointed to the recent assault on Ngoshe community in Borno State where terrorists reportedly overran soldiers, killing some troops and residents while taking away many women and children.

“This week alone in Borno State’s Ngoshe community, terrorists overpowered soldiers, killing them and several citizens, while abducting more than 100 women and children, yet our leaders are silent,” Obi said.

He also lamented what he described as the quiet treatment often given to fallen soldiers who die while defending the country.

“The sacrifice of our brave and dedicated soldiers is passed in silence. I look forward to the day when our fallen soldiers are given the dignified burials they deserve, with their bodies received and honoured by the nation’s leaders and political authorities,” he added.

The former governor of Anambra State also highlighted reports of worsening security in other parts of the country.

He mentioned communities in Nasarawa State, Kogi State and Benue State where residents claim armed groups have taken over farms and forest areas, disrupting livelihoods and forcing villagers to abandon their homes.

“In Nasarawa’s Kadarko area alone, 14,318 civilians are now registered as internally displaced persons,” he stated.

Obi further referred to reports of kidnappings and violent attacks in Oyo State and Ondo State, alongside incidents in Kebbi State where security operatives and civilians were reportedly targeted.
He expressed worry that criminal activities had also reached the nation’s capital.

“The wave of terror has now brazenly crept into our nation’s capital. The attack in Kubwa, Abuja, just this week saw about 19 citizens abducted from their homes, including women and children,” Obi said.

He described the development as a troubling sign that insecurity has become a daily reality for many Nigerians.

“The ruling class are instead devastatingly more preoccupied with how to snatch, grab, and run away with the next election,” he said.

“These are not just news items. Nigerians deserve commitment and leadership that puts their safety and welfare first. It is time to restore security, dignity, and hope to every corner of this nation,” Obi added.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Friday, the 6th of March mourned residents killed during the Boko Haram attack on Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area.

Zulum spoke during a visit to Pulka where he met members of the affected community and sympathised with families who lost relatives in the assault.
The attack, said to have happened late Wednesday night, left several people dead while many others were taken away by the attackers.

The governor assured residents that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those abducted.
