Nigeria’s goalkeeping department has received a timely boost after FIFA officially approved Arthur Okonkwo’s request to switch his international allegiance to the Super Eagles.
The clearance, granted on December 30, 2025, makes the England-born goalkeeper immediately eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level, having previously featured only for England’s youth teams.
Okonkwo, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, qualifies for the switch under FIFA regulations because he has not played a competitive senior international match for England.
His approval ends months of administrative processes between the player, the Nigeria Football Federation and FIFA.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper came through Arsenal’s academy and has gained valuable first-team experience in the English league system, with recent performances earning praise for his composure, shot-stopping ability and command of the penalty area.

While the NFF has not yet confirmed when Okonkwo will receive his first Super Eagles call-up, his eligibility places him in contention for upcoming international fixtures, including future Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying matches.
His availability is expected to increase competition within the squad and address a position that has drawn scrutiny in recent seasons, as Nigeria looks to strengthen its options ahead of crucial international engagements.
