The rescue operation involved the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigerian Red Cross, State Emergency Management Agency, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the police.

The cause of the collapse remained unknown as of the time of filing this report.

The incident adds to a series of deadly building failures across Nigeria. At least six people were killed when a shopping plaza under construction collapsed in Onitsha, Anambra State, in February 2024, while 22 people died after a school building collapsed in Jos, Plateau State, in July 2024.

The Enugu collapse is expected to renew scrutiny of construction safety and compliance with building regulations.
