The Lagos State Government has announced the availability of 1,710 operational public toilets across different parts of the state as part of its sanitation drive.
In addition to expanding public facilities, the government has urged private organisations—including filling stations, banks, eateries, and other customer-facing businesses—to allow public access to their restrooms.
The move is aimed at curbing open defecation and improving overall hygiene standards.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a post shared on X on Saturday. He noted that the toilets have been strategically distributed to cater to both residents and visitors.
Wahab emphasised that tackling sanitation challenges requires collective effort, calling on businesses to support government initiatives by making their facilities available where feasible.
“As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation across Lagos State, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located across the state for residents and visitors.
“However, government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible.

This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state,” the statement read.
He further disclosed that authorities are enforcing environmental sanitation laws alongside the provision of infrastructure, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.
“Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement read.
According to Wahab, the initiative is crucial for safeguarding public health, promoting dignity, and ensuring a cleaner environment.
“These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all,” the statement read.
He reiterated that maintaining sanitation standards is a shared responsibility, urging residents and businesses to complement government efforts.
“While government continues to expand infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring Lagos remains clean, safe, and habitable,” the statement read.
