Seven people have died and two others were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash at the Old Toll Gate area along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway in Ota, Ogun State, on Tuesday morning.
The accident involved a vegetable oil tanker with registration number EKY 913 YH, which reportedly suffered brake failure. The driver lost control and collided with other vehicles and bystanders, resulting in the deaths of six men and one woman. The two injured victims, a man and a woman, were rushed to Ota General Hospital for treatment.
Governor Dapo Abiodun condemned the reckless driving habits of some truck operators along the Sango–Ota corridor, describing the crash as “painful and unacceptable.” He extended condolences to the bereaved families and directed an immediate investigation, stating that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law. The governor also called for stricter traffic enforcement by the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps.
The Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Lawal Adewale Wasiu, visited the crash site and urged strict adherence to traffic regulations, warning against roadside trading and other risky activities.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the victims were evacuated to Ota General Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at Ifo General Hospital morgue. Motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, were urged to ensure thorough mechanical checks before embarking on journeys.
The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying road safety enforcement to protect lives and property across the state.
