Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, will on Wednesday commission the Ovom Street Road project in Aba and perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, also in Aba.
The development was disclosed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor.
Kanu described the Ovom Street Road as a landmark project, noting that the site was previously affected by severe gully erosion before being reclaimed and redesigned for road construction.
“This road project is indeed a watershed because the project site was first recovered from a very devastating type of gully erosion before the road was designed to occupy the former erosion site. It is one of the most captivating engineering feats of this administration,” he said.
He added that both the Ovom Road and the Enyimba International Hotel projects represent significant milestones in the urban renewal and infrastructure development drive of the state government, particularly in Aba as the commercial hub of Abia.
Kanu further disclosed that the governor will on Thursday flag off the construction of the Ukwa East General Hospital located at Ohanku in Ikwuorie Autonomous Community, Ukwa East Local Government Area, as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare across the state.
He also announced that the State Executive Council had approved a partnership between the Abia State Ministry of Health and the QANTUS Medical Foundation, a United States-based healthcare consultancy, to train health workers across various cadres.
According to him, the collaboration is aimed at instilling best practices and driving a culture change in healthcare delivery in the state.
“His Excellency has approved the collaboration between the State Ministry of Health and the U.S.-based healthcare consultancy outfit to ensure a healthcare culture change in the state. This is aimed at training health workers to embrace best practices in the delivery of healthcare,” Kanu said.
The Commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche, said the partnership aligns with the governor’s reform agenda in the health sector. He explained that members of the foundation would train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health workers to improve service delivery through better communication and professional standards.
He noted that the programme would be implemented in phases, beginning with doctors and nurses before cascading to health workers at the local government level.

Kanu also revealed that the Ministry of Health would recommence the functionalisation of 53 fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centres under the “Project Ekwueme” and IMPACT PHCs initiatives to strengthen primary healthcare services in the state.
In addition, he said the Abia State Digital Health Pilot Project has commenced in selected hospitals and primary healthcare centres to enhance service delivery through technology-driven solutions.
He disclosed that the Pediatric Association of Nigeria has scheduled its 2027 Annual General Meeting to be hosted in Abia State, describing it as recognition of the state government’s health sector reforms.
Kanu further stated that the Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign, which began on February 3, 2026, has been successfully concluded with a 96 per cent coverage rate, surpassing the 95 per cent herd immunity target.
He said the campaign was conducted in schools and other social institutions across the state, with over 1,000 groups participating in the exercise.
Uche called on parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated, assuring residents that vaccines administered in the state are safe and preserved in line with approved safety protocols.
