Oyo Police Recover N300,000, Detain SRS Officers Over Extortion Allegation

The Oyo State Police Command has detained and commenced disciplinary proceedings against a member of its Special Response Squad (SRS) and the team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), over the alleged extortion of ₦300,000 from a resident.

The development was disclosed on Wednesday in Ibadan in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade.

According to Ayanlade, the command immediately launched a comprehensive investigation following the circulation of a transfer receipt online alleging extortion by SRS operatives.

“Following diligent internal review, the officer directly involved has been identified, defaulted, and is currently in detention pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.

The team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been formally queried in line with established regulations. It is important to categorically state that the entire sum of ₦300,000 alleged to have been extorted has been fully recovered,” he said.

The command urged the affected individual to come forward to reclaim the recovered money and to voluntarily make a formal statement to facilitate the conclusion of investigations and imposition of appropriate sanctions.

Ayanlade also disclosed a separate case involving officers stationed at Zenith Bank, Bodija, who were accused of extorting ₦30,000. The officers, he said, have been identified and detained for internal investigation and orderly room trial.

“The affected individual has formally lodged a complaint, and the matter is being processed in accordance with due disciplinary procedures,” he added.

The command encouraged members of the public whose rights may have been violated or who have been subjected to extortion to provide actionable information and credible evidence to aid ongoing reforms and accountability measures.
