PDP Demands Action As Seven Killed In Fresh Plateau Mining Attack

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the killing of seven persons at a mining site in Wat, Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, describing the incident as another grim reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement issued on Friday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the opposition party said the victims—described as citizens “in their prime”—were brutally murdered on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, by what it termed “enemies of the state.”

The PDP accused the government of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, noting that repeated incidents of violence across Plateau State have continued unchecked, eroding public confidence and deepening fear among residents.

“This senseless loss of life is a gloomy testament to the government’s lack of proactiveness and apparent indifference to the safety and welfare of the people it was elected to serve,” the party said.

Citing Section 14(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the PDP stressed that security and welfare of citizens remain the primary purpose of government, warning that continued inaction threatens democratic stability and social cohesion in the state, often referred to as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”

The party recalled findings from a 2025 fact-finding committee set up by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, which reportedly revealed that attackers involved in previous killings often came from neighbouring states. According to the report, over 420 communities were attacked, nearly 12,000 lives lost, and thousands—mostly women, children, and the elderly—displaced.

Describing the violence as “well-coordinated, deliberate, and devastating,” the PDP insisted that Plateau State cannot afford to treat such atrocities as routine.

The party demanded an immediate, transparent, and impartial investigation into the killings, the swift prosecution of those responsible, and the development of a clear, actionable security plan to address the root causes of violence in the state.

“The art of rhetoric and empty condemnations will not suffice. The people demand action, justice, and a government that places human life above political power,” the statement added.

Signed by the party’s Plateau State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Choji Felix Dalyop, PhD, the PDP expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and urged both national and international stakeholders to closely monitor the resurgence of insecurity and human rights concerns in the state.
