Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the devastating flood disaster that struck Yola, Adamawa State, calling for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s disaster management and urban infrastructure systems.
In a statement released via his verified social media handle on Thursday, Obi mourned the loss of lives and extended heartfelt condolences to families of the deceased, as well as solidarity with the injured and displaced victims of the flooding.
“My heart goes out to the families of the latest disaster who have lost loved ones and to all those injured in the tragic flood in Yola,” Obi stated. “This is another painful reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure across Nigeria.”
Obi praised the swift response of the Adamawa State Government, the Police Command, and other emergency agencies, but emphasized that reactive measures were no longer sufficient to address the scale of recurring natural disasters in the country.

“Disasters must no longer be reduced to passing headlines. It is time for our government, at all levels, to embrace a proactive approach,” he said, urging investments in effective drainage systems and sustainable infrastructure that can protect lives and livelihoods.
He also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relief bodies to move swiftly in providing both immediate aid and long-term support to the affected communities.
Obi concluded his message with prayers for the souls of the departed and a wish for quick recovery and restoration for those affected by the flooding.
