Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the lifetime flight ban imposed on Ms. Comfort Emmanson, a young passenger involved in a recent incident aboard an Ibom Air flight.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Obi described the decision as “systemically wrong and unjust,” questioning the speed and severity of the punishment. He argued that the sanction highlighted an unequal justice system in which the less privileged face swift consequences, while the powerful often evade accountability.
Quoting the ancient Greek philosopher Anacharsis, Obi said the situation demonstrated how “the law is like a spider’s web: it catches the weak, while the powerful break through with ease.” He condemned what he called an “authoritarian decision” and demanded clarity on the due process followed overnight to arrive at the lifetime ban.
“It is a tragic irony that a young lady in her twenties can be banned for life, while those in positions of authority perpetrate far greater offences… yet move freely in comfort, shielded from consequences,” Obi stated. He urged for a justice system that is consistent, compassionate, and rehabilitative, particularly when misconduct stems from frustration or displaced aggression.

Obi acknowledged that Emmanson had acted wrongly but stressed the importance of allowing space for apology and resolution. “Justice must be equal for all… Power must never determine who is punished and who is pardoned,” he said, adding that Nigeria must embrace fairness and humanity in its handling of such matters.
The Ibom Air case has continued to spark debate nationwide, with many Nigerians divided over the balance between maintaining order on flights and ensuring that punishments are proportionate and just.
