The Bauchi State Government has successfully evacuated 64 students of the University of Jos following recent violent incidents in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State.
The unrest reportedly claimed around 27 lives, raising serious concerns over the safety of students in the region.
The state Commissioner for Higher Education, Hadiza Kango, confirmed the development on Friday while receiving the students at the Government House in Bauchi.
She explained that the evacuation was prompted by a distress call from the President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), Mohammed Suleiman, who reported that the students were trapped in their hostels.
She said, “My attention was drawn to the situation by the NUBASS President, Mohammed Suleiman.
Immediately, he alerted me, I took action, and the government responded swiftly with full support and cooperation to rescue the students.”

Kango further noted that officials ensured the students’ safe return before handing them over to their parents and guardians.
“Education is very important. Their status as students informed our quick intervention.
I am glad they stayed together, avoided trouble, and did not participate in the crisis.
That shows responsibility. They should maintain this conduct and remain committed to their studies,” she added.
Confirming the evacuation, student leader Mohammed Abdulwahab said buses and security personnel were deployed to bring the affected students safely back to Bauchi.
He also commended the state government for its prompt action in addressing the situation.
The Plateau crisis has intensified security concerns in Jos in recent days, affecting residents and institutions alike, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures for vulnerable communities.
