The Delta State Police Command has foiled a suspected cult initiation ceremony in Orogun Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area, recovering firearms, ammunition, seven vehicles and other exhibits.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, following credible intelligence that members of the Black Axe Confraternity, also known as Aye, were conducting an initiation ceremony in a forest within the community.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, the command’s Quick Response Squad (QRS) stormed the location where the suspected cultists had assembled.
The suspects reportedly opened fire on the advancing officers upon sighting them.
However, the police operatives responded with superior tactical firepower, forcing the suspected cultists to abandon the gathering and flee into the adjoining forest along the Abbi–Abraka axis.
The police stated that a thorough search of the area led to the recovery of one pump-action gun, one cut-to-size double-barrel gun, seven live cartridges and two expended cartridges.
The police also recovered seven vehicles, six mobile phones, suspected cult regalia and other personal belongings believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing suspects.

The PPRO said all recovered exhibits are in its custody, while efforts have been intensified to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Commending the operatives for the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised their professionalism and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing in the fight against cultism and other violent crimes.
He urged residents of the state to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information that would assist security agencies in preventing crime and apprehending criminal elements.
The Command reiterated its resolve to sustain operations against cult groups and other criminal networks in order to ensure the safety and security of lives and property across Delta State.
