Police Launch Probe Into Viral Edo School Bullying Video

The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral bullying incident involving students of Igbinedion Secondary School in Edo State, following widespread public outrage over the disturbing video circulating on social media.

In a press statement dated Saturday, March 14, and released on Sunday, March 15, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the command was aware of the incident and had begun steps to address the situation.

“The Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it is aware of the viral video circulating on social media showing a disturbing incident of bullying involving a schoolboy at Igbinedion Secondary School,” the statement read.

According to the police, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, has directed the relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to proceed to the school and commence a detailed inquiry into the matter,” the statement added.

According to the statement, the school management had already taken disciplinary action against the students involved in the incident.

Despite the action taken by the school, the police said the command had launched its own investigation to ensure accountability.

“Notwithstanding the action taken by the school, the Edo State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident,” the statement said.

The command also assured the public that those responsible for the bullying would face legal consequences in accordance with the law.

“The Command wishes to assure the general public that the perpetrators involved in the bullying incident will be arrested and made to face the law accordingly, in line with their respective ages and in accordance with the provisions of the law,” the statement stated.

Condemning acts of violence and intimidation among students, the police emphasised their commitment to addressing such behaviour within educational institutions.

“The Edo State Police Command totally condemns acts of bullying, violence, or intimidation among students, and anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

The police also urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations continue and to support law enforcement authorities with useful information.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain calm and continue to support the Police with credible information that can aid the ongoing investigation,” the statement added.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about student safety and the need for stronger anti-bullying measures in schools across the country.
