Tensions ran high at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday as the embattled National Secretary, Samuel Anyawu, and Ude Okoye, whom the Court of Appeal recently declared as the authentic National Secretary, were both expected to resume duties.
The headquarters witnessed minimal police presence and protests by supporters of the two politicians. A group of Samuel Anyawu’s loyalists staged a demonstration at the party’s entrance, chanting songs and insisting that Anyawu remains the rightful National Secretary.
Despite the ongoing tension, Anyawu drove into the premises amidst cheers from his supporters and proceeded to his office, where he held a brief prayer session before addressing journalists.
When questioned about the Court of Appeal’s ruling in favor of Okoye, Anyawu revealed that he had appealed the judgment and that the matter is now before the Supreme Court.
He dismissed last week’s statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, which acknowledged Okoye as the recognized National Secretary, calling it the individual’s personal opinion.
The leadership tussle stems from Anyawu’s decision to contest the Imo State governorship election, which he lost to the incumbent.
During his absence, Okoye managed the affairs of the office, eventually challenging Anyawu’s right to reclaim the position upon his return.
The Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Okoye, prompting the PDP National Working Committee to officially recognize him as the party’s National Secretary.
In a statement, the party reiterated its respect for judicial decisions, stating that it upholds the Court of Appeal’s pronouncement.
As the legal battle continues, the party faces growing uncertainty, with concerns over the impact of the dispute on its unity ahead of crucial elections.
