Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has criticised Nigeria’s political parties, accusing them of being a major obstacle to the nation’s progress 65 years after independence.
Falana made the remarks on Wednesday, October 1, during a special Channels Television broadcast marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
He condemned the “winner-takes-all” attitude of modern-day political parties, saying it was a departure from what was practised during the Second Republic.

“There must be proportional representation. The winner-takes-all system is part of the problems we face currently,” Falana said.
The senior advocate insisted that power cannot be concentrated in the hands of the ruling party alone, arguing that it must be shared with other constituencies.
He further warned that unless parties are built on solid ideology and orientation, corruption, impunity, and recklessness will persist in Nigeria’s political system.
