The Presidency has dismissed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing it as a move driven by personal ambition rather than political ideology.
Reacting to the development on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, downplayed El-Rufai’s political relevance and suggested that his motives would face scrutiny in the coming days.
In a post on his verified X handle (@DanielBwala), Bwala argued that switching parties does not automatically equate to a meaningful ideological shift, especially when aligned with opposition figures seeking to unseat the ruling government.
“We would intellectually remind you that associating with sore losers to unseat the incumbent is not an ideology, neither is it progressivism; it is simply an inordinate ambition, that is destined to fail,” Bwala stated.

El-Rufai, confirming his defection on Monday, maintained that joining the SDP was the best political decision for him at this time. However, the Presidency sees his move as part of a personal agenda rather than a significant political realignment.
Bwala further remarked that El-Rufai’s departure from the APC was not a sudden or monumental event, insisting that the coming days would reveal the true motivations behind his decision.
The defection has sparked political discussions, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach, with observers watching closely how El-Rufai’s new political path unfolds.
