First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called for greater protection and empowerment of widows, urging governments, communities, and relevant stakeholders to end harmful cultural practices that diminish their dignity and well-being.
In her message to commemorate International Widows’ Day 2026 on Tuesday, Tinubu stressed the need for widows to be safeguarded from discrimination, economic hardship, and social marginalisation.
Referencing the 2026 theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – The African Perspectives,” the First Lady appealed for stronger commitment to improving the lives of widows in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the globe.
“Today, on International Widows’ Day 2026, I urge us to reaffirm our support for widows across Nigeria, Africa, and the world as we reflect on this year’s theme: ‘Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – The African Perspectives,’” she said.
Tinubu noted that widows should enjoy legal protections that guarantee their rights while also receiving the support needed to rebuild their lives and secure a better future.

“Widows deserve to live free from discrimination, harmful practices, poverty, and exclusion.
They must be protected by laws that uphold their rights and be empowered through education, access to opportunities, and economic support to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope,” she stated.
She further advocated the abolition of traditions and customs that subject widows to degrading treatment in many parts of Africa.
“In Africa, we must do away with harmful traditional practices that are dehumanising to widows.
“We must continue to promote compassion, inclusion, and policies that protect widows for a safer and more prosperous society.
The society should empower widows to be able to provide for their families,” she added.
The First Lady also extended her goodwill to widows nationwide on the occasion of International Widows’ Day and reiterated her support for programmes and initiatives aimed at advancing their welfare and protecting their rights.
