The Rights Enforcement and Public Law Centre recently held a community sensitisation programme at Ajah Market in Lagos to educate women and vulnerable groups on their rights under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
The initiative, supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, aimed to correct misconceptions about the law and promote better understanding of lawful arrest, detention, and bail procedures.
Executive Director of REPLACE, Felicitas Aigbogun-Brai, said the outreach was necessary to empower grassroots women with knowledge of legal protections, noting that the law safeguards the rights of women and vulnerable persons.
She added that the organisation has been engaging the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders to discourage unlawful practices, including arrest in lieu, while promoting respect for women’s rights, including the ability to stand as sureties.

Market leaders and participants described the sensitisation as impactful, noting increased awareness that abuse is an offence and that all citizens are entitled to dignity under the law.
Stakeholders emphasised that sustained grassroots education remains key to ensuring effective implementation of the law.
