Rivers Police Suspend DPO, Officer Over Cultists’ Renovation Of Outpost

The Rivers State Police Command has relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another officer of their duties following allegations that suspected cultists financed the renovation of a police outpost in the area.

The officers have also been queried and are currently under investigation over the incident, which reportedly came to light after suspected cultists visited the facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the renovation.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Port Harcourt by its Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe.

According to the statement, the police had taken note of a trending social media report and video alleging that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt.

The command condemned any association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force, warning against allowing suspected criminal groups to use public institutions to gain legitimacy or influence.

Agabe said, “The Rivers State Police Command has taken cognisance of a trending social media report and circulating video alleging that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost and visited the facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the renovation.

“The Command strongly condemns any action or association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or conferring legitimacy, recognition or acceptance on suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations.”

She stressed that police facilities were established to protect citizens and enforce the law and must not become platforms for criminal groups seeking public acceptance.

The police spokesperson added that the command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olugbenga A. Adepoju, maintained zero tolerance for criminality and conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the force.

Agabe further disclosed that the commissioner had ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the renovation and determine the veracity of the allegations.

She said the investigation would identify the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the project, establish which police officers authorised or approved it, and determine the extent of any involvement by personnel of the force.

The command, however, clarified that it welcomed legitimate community contributions towards improving police facilities, provided such support complied with the law and did not compromise police independence or professional standards.

According to Agabe, Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

She added that investigators would determine whether the necessary approvals were obtained and appropriate checks conducted on those who financed or facilitated the renovation.

The command said the investigation would establish whether any rules or professional standards were breached in the course of the project.
