Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented the Rivers South-East Senatorial District and chaired the Senate Committee on Works, has died at the age of 64.
His death was confirmed on Thursday, February 19, 2026, with colleagues in the National Assembly expressing shock and mourning the loss of the senior lawmaker.
Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, paid tribute on social media, writing, “Good night my dear friend. Rest in Peace, Senator Mpigi Barinada. Sen Mpigi represented Rivers South East in the Senate.”
Senator Mpigi had served in the House of Representatives from 2011 before being elected to the Senate in 2019, representing Rivers South-East.

During his tenure in the Senate, he chaired committees investigating infrastructure and oil sector issues and was serving as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works at the time of his death.
