Sanwo-Olu Unveils New 24-Car Trains To Boost Lagos Red Line Capacity

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the arrival of a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line.

The governor disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X handle on Thursday, April 16, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve urban transportation across the state.

He said, “We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet.”

Sanwo-Olu noted that the additional trains would significantly improve passenger movement and ease congestion along the busy corridor.

He said, “This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians.”

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to modernising public transport, the governor added that the long-term goal remains to build a system that meets the needs of the state’s growing population.

He said, “We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone. That is still our goal.”

The Red Line rail project is one of the flagship transport initiatives under the Lagos State Government’s broader mobility strategy aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity.

The line runs from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, passing through key districts including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, areas known for heavy commuter traffic.

Designed as a mass transit solution, the Red Line operates alongside the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway corridor, integrating with existing rail infrastructure to enhance efficiency.

Since its commissioning, the rail line has been positioned as a critical alternative to road transport, offering faster and more predictable travel times for thousands of daily commuters.

With the addition of the new train sets, authorities expect a notable increase in operational capacity, which could translate into shorter waiting periods at stations and improved service frequency.

The development comes as Lagos continues to grapple with rapid urban growth and increasing pressure on its road network, making investments in rail transport a central component of long-term urban planning.
