The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Wednesday commended troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their bravery in confronting insurgents in the North-East and called for intensified military operations following a deadly attack on a military formation in Kukawa Local Government Area.
Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of soldiers who lost their lives during the assault, which occurred in the early hours of March 9, 2026.
The motion was moved by Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who told plenary that suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a coordinated attack on the army base, engaging troops in nearly 24 hours of intense gunfire.
He said the insurgents approached from multiple directions, resulting in casualties on both sides, including the death of Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faru, who had played a key role in the return of residents to Kukawa town.
Several other soldiers were also killed, and military vehicles were set ablaze with weapons looted during the attack.
Monguno added that another community in Kukawa, Doro, was attacked earlier on Tuesday, leading to the death of an additional soldier.

The motion was seconded by Kaka Shehu Lawan, who expressed concern over a resurgence of insurgent attacks across Borno State, citing assaults in Mafa, Baga, and Konduga that resulted in civilian and military deaths, including three commanding officers in recent days.
Following deliberations, the Senate commended the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly Operation Hadin Kai troops, for their resilience and commitment to protecting communities.
Lawmakers urged the military to intensify counter-insurgency operations through enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and logistical support to end insecurity in the North-East.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin praised Monguno for presenting the motion and acknowledged the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tackling security challenges nationwide.
Despite over a decade of military operations against Boko Haram and affiliated factions, sporadic attacks on communities and military formations continue to challenge efforts to restore lasting peace in the region.
