Shehu Sani: Nigerians Paying Price For US Visa Clampdown

Former senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has commented on the recent visa restrictions imposed by the United States on Nigeria.

Sani made his position known in a post shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, the 14th of January, 2026, where he pointed out that South Africa was not included in the affected countries, despite what he described as repeated criticism of former U.S. President Donald Trump by South Africans.

It was earlier reported that the United States announced a suspension of visa processing for applicants from Nigeria, Russia and several other countries. The decision forms part of a broad reassessment of America’s immigration vetting procedures.

Responding to the development, the former lawmaker criticized what he termed the role of some Nigerians in contributing to the situation, while lamenting the impact of the policy on innocent citizens.

“In the latest US Visa restrictions, Nigeria and Nigerians are affected and South Africans are exempted despite all their attacks on Trump and the imperialist sycophancy of some of our people.

“The US shouldn’t be blamed. Those who dragged us here are those who think that by campaigning against their country they would be spared, insulted, rewarded or adopted.

“Nigerians studying, living, working or just visiting the US have become victims caught up in this mess. No 30 pieces of Silver for those who led us here.”
