Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.
Shettima arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, after the summit, held from September 12 to 13.
Nigeria, a BRICS partner country since January 2025, used the meeting to advance its economic and diplomatic interests and deepen ties with emerging economies.
On September 13, Shettima met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit, with talks covering trade, investment, energy, agriculture, healthcare, defence and digital technology. Renewed Indian purchases of Nigerian crude oil were also discussed.

The previous day, Shettima met World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for multilateralism and the rules-based global trading system.
At the summit, he conveyed Nigeria’s call for reforms to global governance and international financial institutions, while promoting the country as an investment destination and gateway to Africa’s market through the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The latest engagement builds on Nigeria’s growing BRICS ties. Shettima represented Tinubu at the bloc’s 15th summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2023, where he advocated stronger economic cooperation between emerging economies and Africa.
Shettima’s return marks the end of Nigeria’s latest high-level engagement with the BRICS grouping.
