Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday commissioned the newly completed Protocol Lounge at the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upgrading aviation infrastructure and improving air travel experience in the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, Soludo described the project as a significant step in the state’s multi-phase plan to modernise the airport and enhance its capacity to attract regional and international flights. He said the new facility reflects his administration’s agenda of building a prosperous and livable Anambra.
“This state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide world-class services to our distinguished guests and dignitaries,” the governor said. “By upgrading our airport infrastructure, we are not only improving passenger experience but also signalling to investors that Anambra is open for business. This is about jobs, growth, and sustainable development for our people.”
Soludo noted that modernising aviation infrastructure remains a critical pillar of his development blueprint, citing job creation, skills development and increased air connectivity as expected benefits. He also emphasised the importance of collaboration with federal aviation authorities and international partners to ensure compliance with global standards.
The newly commissioned Protocol Lounge features executive seating, exclusive waiting areas, enhanced security, and dedicated check-in services designed to offer dignitaries, government officials and high-profile travellers a more comfortable and efficient airport experience.

Stakeholders at the event, including the Commissioner for Transportation, Patricia Igwebuike, said the upgraded facilities will boost tourism, commerce and investment opportunities in Umueri and across the state.
The Chinua Achebe International Airport has been central to Anambra’s aviation aspirations, with the Protocol Lounge adding to ongoing modernisation efforts. In April, Soludo named the access road to the airport after his predecessor, Chief Willie Obiano, in recognition of his contributions to the state’s development.
