Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a blistering attack on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, calling for the immediate removal of Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over what he described as incompetence, illegality, and institutional collapse.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Sowore alleged that morale within the Police Force has deteriorated significantly under Egbetokun’s leadership, warning that the situation has reduced the institution to what he termed a “trivialised caricature.”
According to Sowore, the damage under the current police leadership is evident in the growing loss of public confidence and the deep frustration among rank-and-file officers, whom he said are witnessing the erosion of professionalism within the Force.
He further criticised the Police over their handling of recent reports of church abductions in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, questioning how such an incident could allegedly be denied by authorities for nearly a week.
“How could the Nigeria Police Force deny the obvious church abductions in Kajuru for close to one week?” Sowore asked, describing the response as a reflection of decay, impunity, and leadership failure at the top of the institution.

The outspoken activist also accused the IGP of presiding over what he called a corrupt and illegal tenure, arguing that insecurity, poor communication, and weak accountability mechanisms have continued to undermine the Force’s credibility.
Sowore’s remarks have added to growing public discourse on police reform and leadership accountability, particularly at a time when insecurity remains a major concern across several parts of the country.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official response to the allegations raised by Sowore.
