Sowore Slams Trump Over Praise For Remi Tinubu At DC Event

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised former United States President Donald Trump over his remarks praising Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during a prayer breakfast held in Washington, DC.

In a strongly worded post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Sowore described Trump’s comments as emblematic of what he called the “shameless hypocrisy” embedded in global American politics. He argued that Trump’s public display of faith was driven not by conviction but by political and financial interests.

Sowore accused Trump of exploiting religion as a tool of convenience, alleging that moral and spiritual rhetoric is often discarded when it conflicts with economic or political gain. According to him, individuals and groups previously portrayed as violators of religious freedom are quickly embraced once financial interests are involved.

Trump has no faith in anything but the power of money,” Sowore wrote, adding that religion is frequently “weaponized” for propaganda and later “auctioned to the highest bidder.”

The activist also took aim at what he described as contradictions within American conservative politics, particularly the use of claims of “Christian persecution” to advance ideological narratives, while simultaneously extending high-profile recognition to foreign political figures accused by critics of governance failures.

Sowore’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, drawing mixed reactions from supporters and critics alike. While some echoed his concerns about the intersection of politics, money, and religion on the global stage, others defended the event as a diplomatic and interfaith engagement.

Neither Trump nor representatives of the Tinubu administration have responded publicly to Sowore’s comments as of Friday.
