The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Nigerians to intensify prayers for the country as it moves closer to the 2027 general elections, saying the nation’s stability and progress depend on leaders who demonstrate integrity, vision and accountability.
He made the appeal in his Eid-el-Kabir message delivered on Wednesday, where he called for deeper spiritual reflection, unity and renewed patriotism amid ongoing security and economic challenges.
The Sultan, who is also President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, said prayers remain essential in guiding the emergence of credible leaders capable of addressing insecurity, economic hardship and other national concerns.
He stressed that national development cannot be achieved through elections and political campaigns alone, but through justice, sincerity, competence and selfless service by those in leadership positions.

“Our prayers are always the guiding light toward the choice of our leaders; therefore, we should sustain more prayers in our quest for the best country we desire,” he said.
Abubakar also urged Nigerians to uphold the values of sacrifice, tolerance, obedience and compassion associated with Eid-el-Kabir, noting that such principles are crucial for peaceful coexistence and national cohesion.
He prayed for lasting peace, unity and improved economic conditions in the country, expressing hope that future celebrations would take place under more stable security and economic circumstances.
The Sultan commended Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu for efforts aimed at improving security and supporting the welfare of residents, particularly assistance provided to pilgrims travelling for the 2026 Hajj exercise.
He further prayed for the safe return of all Nigerian pilgrims and called on leaders at all levels to prioritise national interest and citizens’ wellbeing as preparations heighten ahead of the 2027 elections.
