Agbu Kefas Meets President Tinubu at Aso Rock Amid Political Realignment

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, is currently holding a high-level discussion with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting marks a significant engagement as it is Kefas’ first visit to the Presidency since his recent move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor arrived at the State House at approximately 2 pm on Monday, the 1st of December, 2025. He was accompanied by the All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and the pair “proceeded to a closed-door session with the President,” according to a correspondent who observed the arrival.

Governor Kefas, a former Nigerian Army lieutenant colonel and former chairman of the board of NIMASA, secured victory in the March 2023 governorship election on the PDP ticket. He hails from Wukari and previously held the position of Taraba PDP chairman before becoming the party’s standard-bearer.

His formal reception into the APC, which was originally scheduled for the 19th of November, had been postponed. The Governor had stated that it would be “insensitive” to proceed with a political event while Kebbi State was grappling with the distressing abduction of schoolgirls in Maga.

The Governor’s defection follows a trend of political realignment in the state. Just days earlier, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly and “15 lawmakers defected from the PDP to the APC,” citing the necessity to “align with the centre” and the prevailing “crisis in the opposition party at the national level.”

This influx of key opposition figures into the ruling party underscores a broader national political strategy, as the APC has been actively courting opposition figures, with ruling-party officials suggesting the possibility of “more high-profile defections from PDP strongholds in the North and the Middle Belt” as the 2027 general election approaches.
