Teen Sensation Andreeva Claims Historic First Grand Slam Title At French Open

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva etched her name into tennis history on Saturday after defeating Poland’s Maja Chwalinska in straight sets to capture her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open.

The 19-year-old produced a composed display on Court Philippe-Chatrier, overcoming surprise finalist Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to lift the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen and secure the biggest victory of her young career.

The triumph made Andreeva the youngest women’s singles champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles won the tournament as an 18-year-old in 1992. She also became the first player, male or female, born after 2005 to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Already the owner of two WTA 1000 trophies, Andreeva added a major title to her growing collection and is expected to rise to world No. 6 following her Paris success.

Chwalinska, ranked No. 114 in the world before the tournament, saw her remarkable run come to an end in the final. The Polish qualifier had won nine matches in Paris, including qualifying rounds, to become the first qualifier in the Open Era to reach the French Open women’s singles final.

Despite the defeat, the 23-year-old is set to enjoy a significant leap in the rankings, with her run projected to elevate her to world No. 21 and secure regular appearances at the sport’s biggest events.

The final began with both players showing signs of nerves in challenging windy conditions. Andreeva secured an early break before Chwalinska responded immediately, leading to a series of momentum swings in the opening set.

As the match progressed, the Russian settled into her rhythm, using her powerful groundstrokes and composure to take control. She claimed the first set before racing into a commanding lead in the second.

Chwalinska fought hard to stay in contention and even broke Andreeva when the Russian served for the championship. However, the teenager quickly regained control, breaking back in the following game to seal victory.

A winning backhand sparked emotional celebrations from Andreeva, who dropped to her knees after securing the title that marks a major milestone in her career.

The French Open crown caps a breakthrough season for the Russian star and reinforces her status as one of the brightest talents in world tennis.
