Tinubu Decorates Disu As Acting IGP In Abuja Ceremony

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, decorated Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja, formalising a leadership transition at the apex of the Nigeria Police Force.

The 4 p.m. ceremony followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

In attendance were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.

Disu’s appointment comes 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would reach 60.

However, the amended Police Act provides a fixed four-year tenure for an Inspector-General of Police, regardless of age, meaning he could remain in office until 2030 if confirmed.

A career officer who joined the force in 1992, Disu has led the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, headed the Intelligence Response Team, and served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

He most recently held office as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos.

His appointment is subject to consultation with the Nigeria Police Council and subsequent Senate confirmation.
