President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to his longtime friend and political ally, Senator Abu Ibrahim, as the former lawmaker marks his 80th birthday on October 28, 2025.
In a statement issued by the State House and shared on X by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Senator Ibrahim as a principled statesman, loyal ally, and patriot who has shown exceptional commitment to democracy, progressive politics, and national unity.
Tinubu recalled that his relationship with Senator Ibrahim dates back to 1992, when both served in the Senate during the aborted Third Republic—Tinubu representing Lagos West under the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Ibrahim representing Katsina South under the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC).
“Abu has been more than a friend. He is my brother. Since we first met in the Senate chambers in 1992, our friendship has only grown deeper and stronger,” the President said.
He commended Ibrahim’s steadfast advocacy for democracy and his courage during the struggle against military rule, recalling their joint defiance of the military junta following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, which led to their detention.
“When the authorities released him and left the rest of us in the cell, Abu refused to leave, insisting that all of us be released together,” Tinubu recounted.
Highlighting Ibrahim’s political journey, President Tinubu noted that his democratic credentials and dedication to public service earned him multiple terms in the Senate, where he represented Katsina South between 2003 and 2011.

The President also praised Senator Ibrahim’s role in the formation and consolidation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, describing him as a unifying figure whose advocacy for peace and stability has been consistent within the party and across the nation.
Tinubu further expressed gratitude to Senator Ibrahim for his unwavering support during the 2023 presidential campaign and for his continued counsel since the beginning of the Renewed Hope administration on May 29, 2023.
“I thank Senator Ibrahim for his steadfast support and cherished friendship over the years. I thank him for standing with us in our efforts towards achieving Nigeria’s economic recovery and renewed prosperity,” Tinubu said.
President Tinubu concluded his message by joining the senator’s family, friends, and associates in praying for his continued health and strength to further contribute to national development.
