At a gathering inside Windsor Castle on Wednesday, the 18th of March, 2026, Bola Ahmed Tinubu pointed to the deep-rooted ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, drawing attention to shared history and ongoing cooperation.
While addressing the audience, the President highlighted notable athletes of Nigerian descent who have gone on to represent Britain, using them as a reflection of the enduring connection between both countries.
He referenced footballers Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, alongside boxer Anthony Joshua, noting that their success stories speak to the close relationship shared by the two nations.
Tinubu stressed that the bond between Nigeria and the UK extends beyond colonial history, describing it as one built on shared goals and mutual strength.
He also observed that Nigerians living in Britain have grown into one of the most active and influential diaspora groups globally.
Tinubu said, “Nigerians contribute enormously to the vitality of this nation. Within the National Health Service, Nigerian doctors and nurses play an indispensable role in delivering healthcare.
“Nigerian-trained doctors are among the largest groups of international medical professionals serving the NHS.

“In sport, rugby players such as Maro Itoje, footballers including Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, and champion boxer Anthony Joshua illustrate the remarkable human connection that links Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”
The President went on to highlight the role of the Commonwealth of Nations in strengthening ties among member countries, including Nigeria and the UK.
He continued that, “Our partnership is further strengthened through the Commonwealth of Nations, which connects 56 countries under Your Majesty’s leadership.
“As one of the largest nations within the Commonwealth, Nigeria looks forward to contributing constructively to the continued growth and vitality of this global community.”
