President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), according to a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Engr. Ramat, aged 39, is a qualified electrical engineer and administrator, holding a PhD in Strategic Management alongside other professional credentials. His nomination is part of the administration’s broader push to reposition Nigeria’s power sector through capable and reform-minded leadership.
President Tinubu also nominated two additional commissioners to the Commission:
Mr. Abubakar Yusuf – Commissioner for Consumer Affairs
Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun – Commissioner for Finance and Management Services
All appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate, in line with statutory procedures.

However, to avoid any leadership vacuum in the nation’s top regulatory agency for electricity, President Tinubu has directed that Engr. Ramat assume office in an acting capacity pending his formal confirmation.
The President has tasked the nominees with the responsibility of leveraging their professional expertise to drive regulatory efficiency, consumer protection, and reform in the nation’s electricity market.
“The new appointees must work assiduously to advance the administration’s power sector vision,” the statement noted.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission plays a critical role in licensing, market regulation, and ensuring compliance across Nigeria’s power value chain. Strengthening leadership at the Commission is seen as vital to achieving reliable power supply and boosting investor confidence in the sector.
